When Sydney company Smart Press installed a new HP Latex R530 all in-one printer recently, it marked the start of a new era of flexibility, agility and opportunity for the business.

The past few years have seen the company go through a period of transition, emerging with a new name, new location and new services enabled by its investment.

The transformation was sparked by a corporate restructure in 2022, which saw Paul Culliver take over as sole Director, and a move to new, larger premises in late 2024.

Prior to COVID, we had been primarily a cut-sheet digital printer, using HP Indigo digital press technology to produce products like leaflets, brochures and flyers, Paul explains.

Installing a roll-to-roll HP Latex printer about 15 years ago allowed us to produce some wide-format collateral, but I’d always seen great potential to grow that part of the business. These developments created the perfect opportunity for us to do that.

The company explored a wide range of options before settling on the HP Latex R530, and flatbed cutter to support its production workflow. Paul says the choice was largely due to HP’s well-deserved reputation for quality, versatility and sustainability.

Sustainability is a priority for our customers, particularly for clients like hospitals and galleries, who have stringent standards for indoor environments, Paul says.

HP Latex water-based inks are ideal for sensitive environments with their odourless composition and low emissions; HP Latex is the gold standard, and our customers know it. Together with our positive experience with HP technologies, this made the R530 the obvious choice.

The 1.6m wide HP Latex R530 can handle a wide range of media from flexible rolls to boards and other rigid media up to 50mm thick. With fast setup and changeover, and top speeds of up to 31m2/hr1, it is one of the most productive and versatile machines on the market.

This makes it ideal for Smart Print, who are looking to grow business with existing clients, win new work, and create valuable new revenue streams.

As well as versatility, the printer offers exceptional quality and makes it easy to match colour perfectly across output from the R530, the company’s HP Indigo presses and the older roll-to-roll printer.

This means we can be confident that branded collateral we create for our customers will meet their expectations, providing unified results across campaigns or within spaces, Paul says.

Importantly, the R530 is also exceptionally productive. We can change from flexible to rigid substrates, or swap media for a new job, in under a minute, and the speed of the machine is impressive.

Since the printer was installed in October last year, the company has made good use of its flexibility and productivity.

We’ve done everything from printing wallpapers as part of shop and club fitouts, to point of sale collateral, printing glass splashbacks and faux stained-glass windows, to producing retail signage and POS, Paul reports.

Whether it’s floors, walls, windows, counters, or stand-alone signage or campaign collateral, the HP Latex R530 makes every surface a potential marketing space. Our team is really inspired by the possibilities; they’re always experimenting with new ideas.

Underpinning the success of the installation, he adds, is the support of HP and its local partner.

They’ve been fantastic through the learning curve with the new machine and are always willing to go the extra mile, he says.

With their support, and HP’s superior technology, we feel very well positioned for a bright future.

Craig Hardman, HP Large Format Country Manager for ANZ, puts it:

Transformation in print isn’t about just doing more. It’s about helping PSPs like Smart Print focus on the right work—and making sure they have the right tools in place to run production efficiently, predictably, and at a scale that makes sense for their business.
